Trans:Com – in conjunction with The Triffid – welcomes you to the 2nd annual Brisbane Indie Music Market, being held on Sunday 25th August 2019 from 12 noon to 5pm.
These market days are totally different to a typical record fair, as they are wholly dedicated to celebrating Brisbane’s incredible independent music scene – and specifically our city’s passionate record labels which are organisations and collectives that curate and promote independent music of all genres from indie pop to rock to hip-hop to electronic to experimental to jazz to punk to metal and beyond. In 2018, 19 indie record labels from across South East Queensland offered their vinyl, CDs, cassettes, t-shirts and rarities to a fantastic crowd.
This year we are also supporting 100% indie artists with a dedicated booth, as well as having bands, artists and DJs from across the labels perform throughout the day.
Even though technology has changed the music business, record labels are more important than they ever have been. They build community, provide a quality filter, and of course support indie artists in promoting & distributing their creative works. Often it is the record labels that are the foundation to a city’s music scene, such as Factory / Manchester, Warp + 4AD + Mute + Rough Trade / London, Sub Pop / Seattle, Def Jam / New York, Motown / Detroit, Sun / Memphis, and so many more.
Brisbane has its own wonderful collective of record labels, and these market days are your chance to get your hands on limited edition records, CDs, tapes, shirts, exclusive rarities (e.g test pressings), books, zines, etc. – and it’s all single origin and artisanal – just like your favourite coffee! We hope that this becomes an annual event on the Brisbane music calendar. Support your city’s curators of musical culture!
